Te Puke Intermediate Defends Frisbee Championship

Te Puke Intermediate won the Bay of Plenty/ Poverty Bay Ultimate Frisbee Championship for the second consecutive year. The tournament which was played at Gisborne Intermediate saw twelve teams demonstrating their athleticism in what truly is an action packed free flowing game.

Interest levels for Ultimate Frisbee has sky rocketed since Te Puke Intermediate won last years BOP/ PB Frisbee championship and coach Mr Stephen Knightly had approximately seventy student’s trial for the ten person team (5 girls and 5 boy’s). In the end he solved some of his problems when the organisers Gisborne Intermediate allowed him to bring two teams to tournament.

At tournament all teams played five pool games to work out who would then play in semi-finals and finals. Te Puke Intermediate ‘A’ won all five matches comfortably and stepped it up another gear to beat Rotorua ‘A’ in their semi-final.

On the other side of the draw Te Puke Intermediate ‘B’ faced stiff competition from Ilminster last years finalists and Rotorua ‘A’. The ‘never roll over and die’ attitude of the ‘B’ team was impressive and saw them climb back from 5-0 down against Ilminster to 5-4 at full-time. In the end unfortunately they missed out making the semi’s by two points.

In the final which was a repeated final from last year Te Puke Intermediate met Ilminster. As usual captain Vance Gardiner led his team from the front but it was defender Peata Kokiri who brought her best game to the final and made it extremely difficult for Ilminster to score points. Te Puke Intermediate was the better team and went onto win the championship 8-5.

Congratulations to both teams who represented Te Puke Intermediate in the best possible manner. Congratulations to Jared Taylor who was voted Most Valuable Player from the ‘B’ team and to Peata Kokiri who was voted Most Valuable Player for the ‘A’ team. A big thank you to Mr Stephen Knightly who coached both teams, a job incredibly well done!
