Te Puke Intermediate Finishes NZ AIMS Games 11th = Overall
Last week Te Puke Intermediate competed in the NZCT AIMS Games where 125 schools and 4,600 individuals competed in the fifteen sports codes and Te Puke Intermediate finished 11th = overall in New Zealand.
Te Puke Intermediate started the week with Cole Forbes finishing 4th in the Year 7 Boy’s Cross Country. Cole executed his race plan superbly and sat in behind the front bunch of runners to the half way mark (1.5km) before gradually increasing the speed and passing many of the front runners. Cole demonstrated a great deal of maturity in his race and never panicked and to go onto finish 4th place in New Zealand is an outstanding result.
The highlight of my week was watching Te Puke Intermediate win Gold medals in the Aerobics and Hip-Hop Gymsport events. The Aerobics team coached by Yvette Brown performed incredibly well and had some really tough competition. To have all 12 team members perform the most ‘perfect’ performance was fantastic. Congratulations on winning AIMS Aerobics Gold medal and being number one in New Zealand!
On the same evening Te Puke Intermediate’s Hip-Hop crew coached by Sarah Martin won the Gold medal at the AIMS Gymsport event. Te Puke who was one of the last groups to perform handled the pressure well and the judges clearly appreciated the more technical components of their performance. With all 11 members of the team demonstrating a whole lot of attitude the audience gave Te Puke a huge applause at the prize-giving. Congratulations Hip-Hop team on winning the Gold medal at the New Zealand AIMS Games!
Te Puke Intermediate’s Creedance Brown won the Individual Gold medal in the Flyers Men’s Artistic Gymnastics and Emma Butler, Hannah Walling and Tessa Catley finished their Flyers team event with the Silver medal. Overall, Te Puke Intermediate’s Gymnastics team won the Bronze medal at AIMS. The school would like to thank Maureen Campbell, Janet Butler and Te Puke Gymnastics Club for all their help with our Gymnastics team.
Harry Hillier (Year 7) won the Silver medal in his AIMS Golf tournament. Throughout the AIMS week Harry played at Omokoroa, Te Puke, Tauranga and Mount Golf Courses. Amazingly, Harry played under his 10.9 handicap throughout the four day tournament and heading into the final round Harry was tied 1st equal. Harry finished winning the AIMS Silver medal this year but look out for him next year!
Our AIMS Squash team coached by Norma Brown had another successful AIMS tournament. Anthony Jensen and Darren Barnard won the Boy’s Team Bronze medal this year and next year Chanel Wotten and Amy Horscroft potentially could win a gold medal. Great to see Te Puke Intermediate squash continuing the tradition of winning medals at all eight AIMS tournaments.
The AIMS 7’s Rugby tournament was played at the Greerton Marist Rugby Club. Te Puke Intermediate, coached by Regan Williams, got off to a flying start but unfortunately lost to Chisnallwood Intermediate and Tauranga Intermediate in pool play. This put Te Puke out of the tournaments top eight teams and we finished 10th overall. Te Puke Intermediate used the width of the field nicely and were patient with ball in hand and ex New Zealand Sevens player Eric Rush commented on how well our team played the game. Te Puke finished their tournament winning eight games and losing three.
In AIMS Netball Te Puke Intermediate had a shaky start to their tournament. Unfortunately coach Whaea Hiria was struck with early injuries and the team struggled to recover and find the intensity required at AIMS. This year’s team had five Year 7 players so that has been excellent development for next year. Te Puke Intermediate finished the tournament in 22nd place.
Te Puke Intermediate’s AIMS Football team was coached by Grant Cooper and this exciting bunch of players had the best skills Te Puke football has produced in many years. The team relished their opportunity at AIMS and created many opportunities for themselves and made life difficult for many of the bigger teams. Te Puke Intermediate finished the tournament in 22nd place.
Our AIMS Indoor Bowls team was coached by Tony Frankland and Dana Fitness was our standout singles bowler, convincingly winning two of her games. In the pairs George Rowand and Kaleb Simpson-Bond played well together and went onto win two of their games. All of Te Puke’s games were incredibly close with only a point or two separating the two teams.
Te Puke Intermediate is incredibly proud to finish the 2011 NZCT AIMS Games in 11th= place on the overall medals table. With 121 schools competing at AIMS, to finish just outside the top 10 schools in New Zealand is an excellent performance for Te Puke Intermediate. The school is incredibly proud of all our students who represented Te Puke Intermediate and their achievements at the AIMS Games. Te Puke Intermediate would like to thank the organisers of the AIMS tournament and the community for their on-going support of the school’s sports programme.
